Growing Crystal


Aim:

I want to find out how to make crystal from in a supersaturated solution. 

Equipment:

  • A supersaturated solution of Sodium Acetate
  • Bunsen burner
  • A seed crystal of sodium acetate
  • Heat Mat
  • Boiling tube
  • Scissor Tongs
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper
  • Small beaker

Method:

1. Pour approximately 150ml of hot water into a 250 ml beaker.
2. Add a spoonful of sodium acetate and stir until it dissolves.
3. Repeat step 2 until no more sodium acetate will dissolve.
4. filter the solution into a clean 250ml beaker.
5. Pour a small amount of this solution into a watch glass.
6. Label your watch glass and beaker and place the watch glass on a window still overnight.
